Pulmonary Health Issues Affecting
the Geriatric Population
As the body ages there is a gradual deterioration of maximum organ function. The aging process brings changes to the lungs and its surroundings as they stiffen along with loss of elasticity, weaker muscles, and shrunken airways. These changes leave the elderly population more susceptible to breathing problems and disorders.
After studying the information provided and upon completion of the module the learner will be able to:
· Describe the changes that occur in the pulmonary system that affects the elderly population.
· Describe common pulmonary conditions; pneumonia, tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, destructive airway disease, allergies, and lung cancer.
