As a result of age-related changes to the urinary system, older adults are more susceptible to develop infections, excretory problems, skin conditions, and carcinomas among some of the conditions that they can develop. Understanding the physiological changes taking place as the elderly client ages will assist the geriatric nurse in developing care plans specific to the individual client’s needs.
After studying the information provided and upon completion of the module the learner will be able to:
· Discuss the changes that occur in the genitourinary tract as aging occurs.
· Discuss the different types/causes of incontinence and the role of the nurses caring for a client that suffers from incontinence.
· Describe the effect of aging on renal function.
· Describe different types of sexual dysfunction affecting the elderly population.
